The features of frame relay :
(1) Frame relay operates at the higher speed(2MBPS or more)
(2) It operates on physical and data link layer only thats why it can be used at backbone network.
(3) Frame relay allows to carry distorted data.
(4) Frame relay allows to frame size of 9kB/9000 bytes
(5) It is less expensive than other traditional ones.
(6) Frame relay has error detection at the data link layer only.
(7) There is no mechanism for transmitting a damaged frame.
(8) It provides end to end flow control and error control instead of hop by hop error control.
***Frame relay is a virtual circuit wide area that was designed in response to demand for new type of WAN.
(9) It provides both permanent and switched connections
(10) Frame relay is an example of a packet switched technology.
***Packet switching technology uses two techniques : -
(a) Visible length packets.
(b) Statistical multiplex.
***Frame relay WAN has two devices
(a) Data terminal equipment(DTE)
(b) Data circuit terminating equipment(DCE)
